Lesson 4 - ContentDM Basics

 What is ContentDM

CONTENTdm's end-user experience is freshly designed for phones, tablets and workstations. It allows you to easily build and showcase your digital collections on your personalized website, making them more discoverable to people around the world. CONTENTdm also secures and monitors your digital originals in a cloud-based preservation archive so they remain safe for the future. Be confident that all types of users can access your site because of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance efforts.

Setting up a collection

To set up a collection as well as any other administrative tasks, you need to go to the server site

https://server20088.contentdm.oclc.org/

To setup your collection, start with a Template. I'd recommend the My First Collection template. Follow the steps below:

1. Add a collection

2. Choose your template

3. Add Items

Once you have added items into your collection, you have to approve the items. If there are multiple contributors, this gives you an opportunity to reject any that don't meet the requirements.

At this stage you have items that have been added and approved, but they can not be seen by the public yet. You have to now "Index" the collection.

Once the collection has been indexed, you can view the collection!

You can view your collections via the Content link

Class Activity 1

Using the Pandemic Pets Collection, try adding some items to the collection.

Class Activity 2

You may work alone or with a partner to create a Digital Repository policy.

You may also work with a partner to create and maintain your digital repository. If you are working with a partner, make sure that the requirements outlined in the Assessment Guide are doubled i.e. 40 items rather than 20.
